What is a Pass Plus Course?

Pass Plus is a practical training course that takes at least 6 hours and is for drivers looking to improve their skills and drive more safely. It is a course that is optional for motorists having completed their driving lessons and passed their driving test, and can serve to boost confidence and get you discounts on expensive first-time car insurance.

A Pass Plus Course can be taken at any time although it should be most useful to new drivers in the year after passing their test. All of our driving Instructors are Pass Plus registered approved driving instructors (ADI).

How does a Pass Plus Course work?

With Pass Plus Courses, there is no test. Instead, you’ll be assessed by our approved Advanced Driving Instructors to ensure you have reached the required standards in all training modules.

All training modules should be practical sessions, although local conditions may mean some are theory based. You’ll normally spend at least 5.5 hours driving. Pass Plus training takes at least 6 hours and there are 6 modules:

  • driving in town

  • driving in all weathers

  • driving on rural roads

  • driving at night

  • driving on dual carriageways

  • driving on motorways

Upon successfully finishing your Pass Plus Course, you’ll be sent a Pass Plus certificate confirming completion of your training. You’ll need this when applying for a car insurance discount.

Car Insurance Discounts with Pass Plus

Once you’ve completed your Pass Plus Course you may be able to get a car insurance discount. You’ll need your Pass Plus certificate. Check with insurers that you can still get a discount if you passed your practical driving test more than a year ago. The amount of discount depends on the insurance company. Not all insurers offer Pass Plus discounts. You might be able to put the discount on hold for up to 2 years if you don’t have a car at the moment – check with the insurance company first.
